Course Outline:
The Electronics Troubleshooter topical program provides experienced employees with the related courseware they will need to advance their troubleshooting skills. These trade positions include Foremen, Production Testers, Testing Technicians, Customer Service Technicians, Field Service Technicians and Engineers, and Quality Control Technicians. The program covers maintenance and troubleshooting methods and techniques, electronic testing and measuring instruments, and safe troubleshooting practices. Case histories of problems in industrial systems illustrate correct troubleshooting procedures. Employees entering this program should have working experience and knowledge covering electrical and electronic circuits and instruments; pulse, linear, digital, and logic circuits; industrial control systems and microprocessors. In addition, trainees can gain practical experience through a series of hands-on experiments they can perform on the XK-300 Microprocessor Trainer. (The trainer and associated experiment manual are available on an optional basis.) Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
  • List the important steps in preparing for general maintenance and troubleshooting, and name the basic tools required.
  • Explain the importance of maintaining minimum downtime in an industrial operation.
  • Use a systematic and safe procedure when troubleshooting.
  • Locate causes of trouble in basic electronic circuits by a logical process.
  • Identify the proper electronic test instruments for troubleshooting different problems in electronic circuits.
  • Demonstrate how to narrow a difficult problem in a piece of electronic equipment to a section, then to a stage, then to a circuit, and finally to the faulty component.
  • Show how to use triggered oscilloscopes, DVMs, time/frequency meters, logic probes, and precision test equipment to locate faults and determine proper performance in industrial electronic systems.
  • Describe effective ways of handling hard-to-find and intermittent problems.
