Tim's Training Thoughts 2QTR 2005

The second quarter of 2005 has arrived and we are seeing a large increase on inquiries for updated training of workers along with a shift to developmental or foundation and entry level basic skills training. My clients along with a host of new prospective customers are gearing up and suddenly finding that the talent pool is more limited than in past recoveries. Now we take this issue and combine it with the exodus of “baby boomers” over the last few years, the layoffs of multi-skilled workers in the past who are now small business owners and business faces a dilemma. There is a sudden hole in our labor force regarding experience and qualified skilled workers. Where do we find the skilled people we need and need now to expand and compete on a global level?

Alan Greenspan was quoted as saying “our system has obvious strains and need to be forward looking to adapt our educational system to the evolving needs of the economy. We need to discover the means to enhance the skills of our work force and further open markets here and abroad”. Now Mr. Greenspan is much wiser than I am but in effect he says let us compete by training the best workers and building the best infrastructure. Competition for skilled and experience workers will only become more fierce and costly as by 2015 the expected shortfall of skilled workers according to the Kiplinger report will approach 10 million.

The short and sweet of what we are experiencing is that if you want to stay and play you better be trained and be training on a continual basis. Global economics demand that we step up and produce to survive and as a country, we must have skilled workers to accomplish this task. I believe you will see this issue of training become highly charged on the political level in the coming years for one simple reason; in today’s market the K-12 schools and even college studies are not adequately preparing the student to enter our workforce especially in the area of trades.

We at Penn Foster are continuing to forge ahead and make all efforts to support, deliver and produce the training you need for the individual or your company. New products are continuing to hit the shelves that enable our clients to pursue the goals of qualified skilled workers at a cost that works within the budgets and time frames that are shorter. Deliveries in a variety of mediums enable our clients to stay ahead of the competition and play to the strengths that a more finely trained workforce delivers to the bottom line.
